Councils raise £242m from parking permit applications

Local authorities have raised hundreds of millions of pounds over the last three years thanks to applications for parking permits, according to a new study.

The research, published by Churchill Car Insurance, also revealed that in 2017, roads with permits generated £87.6m in revenue – a 13% increase on the previous year.

However, this figure dropped last year to £77.2m.

According to the insurance company’s study, UK councils generated an estimated £200,000 in revenue from parking permits every day in 2018.

The study has also found that the number of roads across the UK requiring parking permits increased by 6% between 2016 and 2018 to 2,500.

Despite the increase in the number of permitted roads, parking permit applications have seen a what Churchill Car Insurance describes as a ‘significant fall’.

Over two million applications were made to local councils in 2016. However, this figure fell to 1.6 million in 2017 and 1.4 million last year.

Only 13% of the population are supportive of parking permits in their area, according to the findings.
