Labour blasts 'disgraceful' cuts to deprived councils

Labour blasts disgraceful cuts to deprived councils image

Labour has accused the Government of making the smallest budget cuts to councils in the constituencies of key cabinet members.

The analysis found Wokingham BC, Surrey CC and Windsor and Maidenhead RBC had seen the lowest budget cuts despite being the least deprived areas in the country.

These areas also cover the constituencies of home secretary Theresa May, health secretary Jeremy Hunt, leader of the House of Commons Chris Grayling, justice secretary Michael Gove and foreign secretary Philip Hammond.

Shadow communities minister Jon Trickett said: 'It is disgraceful that the most deprived areas in our country are bearing the brunt of the Tory Government's ideological cuts to local services when the least deprived areas, which happen to be home to five of David Cameron's top ministers, are seeing the least amount of cuts.

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: 'As we continue to deal with Labour's debt our long-term funding settlement for councils is fair and ensures those facing the highest demand for services continue to receive more funding and have higher spending power than less deprived authorities.
