Think tank outlines priorities for Sheffield's metro mayor

Think tank outlines priorities for Sheffields metro mayor image

The new mayor of Sheffield City Region should quickly introduce a ‘clean air charge’ when they take office, address skills gaps and bolster commercial centres, according to a think tank.

The Centre for Cities says the three policy priorities will help the new metro mayor 'hit the ground running' after the election on May 3.

Centre for Cities chief executive, Andrew Carter, said: 'The new mayor can quickly make their mark by introducing a clean air charge in the city region’s most congested areas, such as the city centre of Sheffield, aimed specifically at the most polluting vehicles.

'This might be controversial with some drivers, but it would make a big difference in improving air quality.

'It would also generate much-needed funding which could be used to improving public transport links across the city region.'

He added: 'There’s a lot at stake for the new mayor. Showing that they mean business from day one will not only be vital in building trust with people who live and work in the area, it will also be crucial in realising their vision for the city region and securing the long term future of the mayoral office.'
